Portable Ambient Vibration Monitoring System

Quick Facts
- Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.
Challenge
Provide a portable, battery-operated system that can capture structural vibrations under natural operating conditions without requiring artificial excitation. Ensure that the system can serve both educational purposes and applied engineering inspections.
Solution
The deployment is based on the xDAS Ambient system, consisting of:
- 5 xWave Ambient triaxial accelerometer channels for high-sensitivity vibration monitoring.
- xPlorer Ambient as the central acquisition and processing module, supplied together with Voyager software for real-time monitoring and data management.
- Observer software suite for data analysis, applying Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) to extract modal properties such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes.
The system is fully portable, battery-operated, and measurement data can be transmitted over a local wireless network to PCs, tablets, or smartphones, simplifying operation in both field and laboratory environments.
Outcomes
This deployment empowers the University to:
- Conduct research and validation studies on buildings, bridges, and other structures.
- Train students with hands-on experience in advanced SHM technologies.
- Perform inspection campaigns and structural assessments with reliable datasets.
- Leverage a portable, user-friendly solution that bridges education, research, and practical engineering needs.
