Challenge
Capture and assess the impact of blast-induced vibrations, overpressure, and cracking on nearby residential structures, while enabling operators to refine blasting operations for both productivity and community protection.
Solution
The system was installed across six distributed locations, each equipped with an xCAS acquisition unit as part of the Sentry platform. The configuration included:
- xRover – multichannel central acquisition with digitizer.
- D-Series analog triaxial accelerometers for ground vibration monitoring.
- Displacement transducers for tracking cracking and structural deformation.
- Environmental sensors for air temperature and humidity.
- Air-blast microphones to capture overpressure effects from explosions.
- xPlorer Premium with Voyager software as the central acquisition and data management unit.
- Observer software suite for advanced analysis, applying Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) to extract modal properties such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes.
All data was synchronized, archived in an SQL database, and made available through a web-based reporting system, ensuring continuous access for both operators and stakeholders.
Outcomes
The system provides Zijin Mining with a comprehensive understanding of how blasting operations affect surrounding communities. Real-time monitoring enables early detection of potentially harmful vibration or air-blast levels, while crack monitoring with displacement sensors offers valuable insight into structural effects on residential buildings. Automated reporting ensures regulatory compliance, while the collected data also supports optimization of blasting sequences, balancing mining productivity with community safety.
