Ambient Vibration Measurement – Residential Building

Quick Facts
- Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.
Challenge
The objective was to:
- Capture ambient vibrations without artificial excitation.
- Ensure a non-intrusive and portable measurement setup suitable for rapid deployment.
- Deliver datasets compatible with Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) methods.
Provide reliable, field-ready instrumentation to meet engineering validation requirements.
Solution
The solution was based on the xDAS Ambient platform, consisting of:
- xWave Ambient triaxial accelerometers (32-bit resolution, ultra-low noise) for high-precision vibration measurements.
- xPlorer Ambient unit with Voyager software as the central acquisition and processing station.
- A fully portable, battery-operated system, enabling quick field setup and continuous measurement.
Data collected during the campaign was further analyzed with Observer OMA software, extracting modal parameters such as frequencies, damping, and mode shapes.
Outcomes
The campaign successfully delivered:
- A validated dynamic signature of the building, useful for inspection, maintenance planning, and safety assessment.
- High-quality datasets enabling OMA analysis and structural validation.
- A demonstration of portable SHM capabilities in urban residential infrastructure.
Strengthened collaboration between academic and engineering communities in Russia for advancing modern SHM practices.
