Challenge

Enable long-term monitoring of a major bridge structure to capture traffic loads, environmental effects, and potential fatigue, ensuring safety and continuity of service.

Solution

A SHM system based on RTMS-2001R was installed with a total of 123 channels, including:

  • 100 channels of acceleration for vibration and dynamic response monitoring
  • 18 channels of strain gauge to capture load effects on the bridge structure
  • 1 channel for wind speed and direction
  • 3 channels of temperature to track environmental influences

This large-scale system provided continuous, multi-parameter insight into the bridge’s performance.

Outcomes

The system delivered one of the earliest comprehensive multi-sensor monitoring datasets for a major bridge in North America. It enabled engineers to assess structural performance under real-world traffic and environmental conditions, improve maintenance planning, and build a long-term database supporting both engineering research and public safety.
