Challenge
Provide real-time monitoring of a long-span suspension bridge exposed to seismic hazards, heavy daily traffic, and potential man-made threats. Ensure that data could be used both for immediate event response and long-term structural evaluation.
Solution
The system was configured with:
- 26 monitoring channels capturing acceleration and structural response.
- Data distribution to three remote locations in real time, ensuring redundancy and accessibility for multiple stakeholders.
- Continuous recording and analysis, providing insights into the effects of high traffic loads, seismic activity, and other stressors.
Outcomes
The Vincent Thomas Bridge system provided valuable datasets for engineers, operators, and authorities. Real-time monitoring enhanced resilience against natural and human-induced risks, while long-term analysis of vibration and traffic effects informed maintenance and safety planning. By delivering data simultaneously to multiple institutions, the system strengthened collaboration and established a benchmark for monitoring long-span bridges in high-risk areas.
