Challenge

Protect critical energy infrastructure from seismic hazards by implementing a system capable of automatic emergency response, including shutdown of heavy machinery, to prevent accidents and safeguard personnel.

Solution

A 12-channel monitoring system was deployed, featuring:

  • Common GPS timing for precise synchronization of seismic events.
  • Automatic relay digital outputs connected to heavy machinery (e.g., cranes) to initiate immediate stop functions.
  • SMS and e-mail alerting for rapid operator notification.
  • Real-time data acquisition and automatic report generation for ongoing seismic activity.

This integration enabled seamless communication between monitoring devices and plant control systems.

Outcomes

The system provides early warning and immediate automated safety measures, such as stopping heavy cranes and other machinery during seismic events. By combining structural monitoring with automated response protocols, the installation significantly reduces operational risk, supports compliance with nuclear safety regulations, and enhances public confidence in the plant’s resilience against earthquakes.
