Quick Facts

  • Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.

Challenge

Monitor the vibrational response of a large offshore wind turbine subjected to environmental forces such as waves, wind, and operational loads, with a focus on validating the novel foundation concept.

Solution

A 16-channel, 16-bit PDAQ Premium system was deployed, connecting multiple accelerometers across the turbine structure. The system continuously recorded vibration data, providing insight into:

  • Global structural response under varying wind speeds and wave action.
  • Dynamic effects of turbine rotation on the steel foundation.
  • Long-term performance trends under real environmental loading.

Outcomes

The deployment provided valuable datasets for validating the structural behavior of offshore wind turbine foundations. The monitoring system allowed engineers to identify vibration characteristics, confirm the safety of the novel foundation, and contribute to design improvements for future renewable energy projects. This case demonstrated how SHM technology could be extended beyond civil structures to support the growth of sustainable energy infrastructure.
