Ambient Vibration Measurement – Church

2024 • Drenovo • Macedonia ,

Quick Facts

  • Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.

Challenge

The project required:

  • Non-invasive, portable measurements suitable for fragile historic structures.
  • Capturing the building’s dynamic response under natural excitation without introducing any artificial loads.
  • Providing actionable datasets to support rehabilitation and conservation planning.

Ensuring compatibility with heritage preservation standards and minimal disruption during monitoring.

Solution

Digitex deployed the xDAS Ambient system, consisting of:

  • xWave Ambient triaxial accelerometers (32-bit, ultra-low noise) to measure natural vibrations with high precision.
  • xPlorer Ambient with Voyager software, serving as the central unit for synchronized data acquisition and processing.
  • A fully portable, battery-operated system enabling quick and safe setup without risk to the structure.

The collected data was processed with the Observer software suite, applying Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) to extract modal frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes.

Outcomes

The campaign provided conservation experts with a validated vibration profile of the church, offering insights into its structural condition and resilience. The results support:

  • Rehabilitation planning by identifying vulnerabilities in the structure.
  • Heritage preservation, ensuring long-term safety of this historic monument.
  • Academic and conservation collaboration, demonstrating how advanced SHM tools can safeguard cultural landmarks.
