Ambient Vibration Measurement – Kindergarten

Quick Facts
- Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.
Challenge
The project needed to:
- Perform non-intrusive vibration measurements during normal daily operation.
- Provide portable, quickly deployable instrumentation with minimal disruption to the kindergarten’s activities.
- Capture high-resolution data suitable for Operational Modal Analysis (OMA).
Deliver reliable results for structural performance evaluation in line with modern SHM practices.
Solution
The solution was implemented using the xDAS Ambient system, consisting of:
- xWave Ambient triaxial accelerometers with 32-bit resolution and ultra-low noise, ensuring accurate capture of low-level ambient vibrations.
- xPlorer Ambient unit combined with Voyager software for real-time acquisition, synchronization, and data management.
- A battery-powered portable system allowing rapid field setup without external infrastructure.
Data was analyzed using the Observer software suite, extracting modal parameters such as frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes to characterize the building’s structural behavior.
Outcomes
The campaign successfully delivered:
- A validated dynamic signature of the building, useful for inspection, maintenance planning, and safety assessment.
- High-quality datasets enabling OMA analysis and structural validation.
- A demonstration of portable SHM capabilities in urban residential infrastructure.
- Strengthened collaboration between academic and engineering communities in Russia for advancing modern SHM practices.
