Bell Tower SHM Monitoring

Quick Facts
- Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.
Challenge
Safeguard a cultural landmark tower from wind and seismic effects by continuously tracking its dynamic behavior and detecting abnormal vibrations before they escalate into structural issues.
Solution
The system was implemented using the xDAS Distributed SHM platform, including:
- 4 xWave triaxial accelerometers to measure vibrations and dynamic responses.
- 1 xSense unit to capture environmental parameters such as wind speed and direction, air temperature, and humidity.
xPlorer Premium with Voyager software as the central acquisition and processing module, synchronizing and processing all data streams in real time.
Outcomes
Developed in close cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Skopje, the system combines academic expertise with advanced SHM technology. It provides real-time insights into the tower’s structural behavior, supports education and research by giving students and researchers access to live monitoring data, and establishes a long-term dataset for assessing the tower’s response to wind and seismic events. This contributes to the safety of the structure and its visitors, while reinforcing the value of monitoring cultural landmarks in earthquake-prone regions.
