Challenge
Develop and deploy a real-time monitoring solution capable of capturing structural response during seismic activity for a tall building in a high-risk earthquake zone, while also creating a research platform for academia.
Solution
The system was configured as follows:
- 36 analog sensor channels distributed across the 10-story reinforced frame structure.
- RTMS-2001 data acquisition platform, designed for real-time monitoring and response analysis.
Integration with Caltech’s research facilities to provide continuous academic access to real-time seismic data.
Outcomes
The project established the first real-time SHM system at an academic site of international importance. It enabled researchers and students to study structural response to seismic activity in unprecedented detail, supported validation of early SHM methodologies, and provided a long-term educational resource for seismic engineering programs. As a legacy deployment, it played a foundational role in shaping both academic research and the evolution of modern SHM technologies.
