Challenge
Provide continuous surveillance of the tailings dam’s structural integrity under seismic activity, operational stresses, and long-term degradation. Detect abnormal behavior early to protect downstream communities, ensure environmental safety, and comply with regulatory requirements for mine waste management.
Solution
The monitoring system was built on the xDAS Distributed SHM platform, consisting of:
- 3 xWave triaxial accelerometers installed at distributed points to measure vibrations and dynamic responses.
- xPlorer Premium with Voyager software serving as the central acquisition and processing unit.
- GPS synchronization across all monitoring locations, ensuring precise time alignment of sensor data.
- Automated SQL-based data archiving and reporting, providing operators with continuous access to measurements and analysis.
Outcomes
The system delivers continuous real-time monitoring of the tailings dam, ensuring that abnormal vibration patterns or settlement are detected early. Synchronization across multiple points provides a comprehensive view of structural behavior, while automated reporting simplifies daily operation and long-term record keeping. This deployment strengthens operational safety for the mining facility, helps optimize mining processes by correlating blasting activity with dam response, supports regulatory compliance, and minimizes environmental risks through timely intervention.
