Challenge

Provide continuous monitoring of the dam’s structural integrity under seismic activity, water-level variations, and environmental stresses. Detect anomalies early to protect downstream communities and comply with regulatory requirements.

Solution

The project was implemented using the xDAS Sentry system, consisting of:

  • 3 xWave triaxial accelerometers (9 channels total) to monitor vibrations and dynamic responses.
  • xPlorer Premium with Voyager software as the central acquisition and data management module.
  • Observer software suite for advanced Operational Modal Analysis (OMA), enabling engineers to track natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes under real operating conditions.
  • FTP redundancy to automatically transfer measurement data to a secure remote server in Athens, ensuring reliable backup and continuous access even if local connectivity is interrupted.

Outcomes

The upgrade equips operators with continuous, high-precision monitoring of the dam’s dynamic behavior. The integration of Observer enables advanced OMA analysis for early detection of subtle structural changes, while FTP redundancy guarantees data security and long-term reliability in this remote mountain environment. Together, these measures enhance operational safety, support compliance, and ensure the sustainable operation of the hydropower facility.
