Challenge
Implement a permanent SHM system capable of verifying retrofit effectiveness and providing real-time data for structural safety assessments after seismic events, ensuring informed decisions regarding building occupancy.
Solution
The system was configured as a 32-channel legacy platform, installed across the building to:
- 32 channel system was used to monitor structural vibrations and dynamic response during seismic activity.
- Provide real-time access to structural health data for operators and engineers.
Capture and archive events ranging from small tremors to moderate earthquakes for analysis of building performance.
Outcomes
The FDIC Building SHM system has successfully recorded a number of small and moderate earthquakes, providing valuable insights into both the structural response and the effectiveness of seismic retrofits. It enabled building operators to make data-driven occupancy decisions after seismic events, reduced uncertainty in post-earthquake recovery, and reinforced the role of SHM in ensuring resilience of tall commercial buildings. As a legacy deployment, it set a precedent for integrating SHM into post-retrofit validation strategies in high-risk urban regions.
