Challenge

Provide a portable, high-precision monitoring solution capable of capturing ambient vibrations under natural operating conditions without external excitation, while being scalable and easy to deploy across diverse structures.

Solution

The deployment was based on the xDAS Ambient system, consisting of:

  • 12 xWave Ambient triaxial accelerometers (32-bit, 0.7 µg/√Hz) for high-precision vibration measurements.
  • 4 xNet Ambient modules for extended channel connectivity.
  • xPlorer Ambient with Voyager software as the central acquisition and processing module.
  • Carry Box, making the system fully portable and battery-operated, ideal for on-site measurement campaigns.

This configuration enables the capture of ambient vibrations without artificial excitation, making it highly suitable for rapid deployment on various infrastructure assets.

Outcomes

The collected data is analyzed using the Observer software suite, applying Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) to extract modal properties such as frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes. This deployment enables IPE-PROING to:

  • Conduct applied research projects across buildings, bridges, and dams.
  • Support inspection and validation campaigns with reliable datasets.
  • Provide professional training and education in advanced SHM techniques.
