Residential Building – Viña del Mar
Quick Facts
- Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.
Challenge
Provide a rapid, high-resolution monitoring system to record building responses during frequent aftershocks, validating structural performance and ensuring occupant safety in a seismically active region.
Solution
The solution consisted of:
- 16 channels of accelerometers connected to the PDAQ Premium monitoring platform for vibration monitoring.
- Deployment on a reinforced residential building to monitor dynamic response across key structural locations.
Continuous recording of seismic activity, including more than 100 aftershocks exceeding magnitude 4.5 within the months following installation.
Outcomes
The system provided valuable datasets for structural validation and post-earthquake assessment. This way, it enabled engineers to confirm the building’s structural integrity under repeated seismic loading. The data supported both local safety decisions and contributed to broader earthquake engineering research. As a legacy deployment, the Viña del Mar project demonstrated the value of Structural Health Monitoring in post-disaster response. In a way, it reinforced the role of monitoring technologies in safeguarding communities in earthquake-prone countries like Chile.
