Quick Facts

  • Add facts in ACF “Quick Facts”.

Challenge

Modernize an existing strong motion monitoring installation to enable higher sampling rates, increased sensor capacity, and real-time data streaming for both academic researchers and operational stakeholders.

Solution

The upgraded installation included:

  • 26 accelerometers connected to the RTMS-2001R platform.
  • High-resolution sampling at 200 samples per second, enabling detailed analysis of building dynamics during seismic activity.
  • Real-time streaming of data to multiple users, including researchers and monitoring centers, for immediate analysis and response.

Outcomes

The project established the Transamerica Building as one of the best-instrumented commercial high-rises in San Francisco for seismic monitoring. It enabled real-time access to seismic response data, supporting both research and safety decision-making. By providing continuous high-resolution datasets, the system advanced understanding of tall building behavior during earthquakes and contributed to improved resilience strategies in urban seismic engineering.
